Dear Prime Minister Harper, I am writing to confirm my support for a single-tier, publicly funded health care system in Canada. I oppose recent plans by Quebec and Alberta to increase privatization of Canada's health care system. Alberta has proposed allowing people to jump the queue and pay for private health care services, private health insurance for publicly-insured services, doctors operating in both the public and private systems, the delivery of public services through private for-profit facilities, and allowing "non-government investment sources" - which will mean opening health care to foreign investors and companies. All of these options violate the letter and spirit of the Canada Health Act and will be detrimental to Canada's national medicare program. Quebec's proposal is equally - if not more - concerning. Under the pretext of reducing wait times, the Quebec government wants to allow residents to buy private insurance for select publicly insured services, and use taxpayers' money to pay for-profit clinics. The use of for-profit clinics will cost more, and provide no accountability to the public system. It also ignores positive changes that can be made in the public sector to improve health care delivery and reduce wait times. Allowing people to buy private insurance for hip replacements, knee replacements and cataract surgeries will mean that more affluent Quebecers will have access to better health care services, in violation of the Canada Health Act, which requires that medical services must be available to all Canadians on uniform terms and conditions. I strongly oppose any expansion of for-profit health care in Canada. Solutions to wait time problems can be found in the public system, as shown by successful programs like the Alberta Hip and Knee Replacement Project and the Pan-Am Clinic in Winnipeg. Prime Minister Harper, I am asking that you uphold your recent election promise to enforce the Canada Health Act and protect Canada's single-tier publicly funded and publicly delivered health care system. Profit is not the cure. Sincerely,
